Jeff Bezos Is Now World’s Richest Man
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has officially passed Bill Gates as the world’s richest man. Reports began to leak earlier this week confirming the constant speculation that Bezos’ net worth would top Gates’ lifetime savings. The longtime CEO is worth an estimated $105.1 billion, easily making him the wealthiest man on the planet.
Bezos Versus Gates
It has been a seesaw battle between Gates and Bezos for the title of world’s richest man. While the news of Bezos surpassing Gates may seem groundbreaking, it is actually the third time in the span of a few months that he could stake a claim to the prestigious label. When Amazon’s shares hit record-highs, Bezos was the richest person on earth in both July and October. He was able to finally hit the $100 billion mark after a historic holiday season for the ecommerce website.
The boost in Bezos’ net worth represents the biggest gap between his and Gates’ net worth that has ever existed. Gates is worth a reported $93 billion today, which is a large bump from the $76 billion he was worth back in 2014. Critics of Bezos point to his lack of charitable work; something that would hit him in the wallet. Gates is well-known for all of his charitable efforts, while many have called for Bezos to follow suit.
World’s Wealthiest Men
Following Bezos and Gates on a list of richest people on the planet are several industry tycoons. Fashion guru, Amancio Ortega, sits right behind the Microsoft founder with a net worth over $90 billion. Needless to say, the 81-year-old is by far the wealthiest man in Europe. Warren Buffett, the famous investment icon is creeping up on Ortega as he’s worth more than $83 billion. But all those wealthy men surely have their eyes on one man who’s half their age: Mark Zuckerberg. The Facebook creator is only 33 years old and has already acquired $74 billion in earnings. As the social media platform continues to grow, Zuckerberg’s chase of Bezos’ wealth will become more compelling by the day.
